Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre

Hate Crime Awareness Event

Launches 2:30 pm- 4:30 pm on January 25th at JNR8.

The Whalley Range Community Forum worker and Chair attended a short training course in November to find out more about the JNR8 Youth & Community Centre taking on the role of a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre, in line with  Manchester’s Hate Crime Strategy.

The strategy sets out a clear vision for tackling hate crime in Manchester against the following five key partnership priorities:

  1. Prevent hate crime,
  2. Increase the reporting of hate crime and hate incidents,
  3. Take effective action against perpetrators,
  4. Support victims of hate crime,
  5. Improve partnership responses.

The five strands of hate crime set out by the Government which will be recorded and monitored are:

  1. Disability,
  2. Race,
  3. Religion or belief,
  4. Sexual orientation,
  5. Trans and gender reassignment.

Alternative sub culture became the sixth hate crime strand in April 2013.

The Whalley Range Community Forum believe the JNR8 Centre is an ideal venue to support residents who feel they have been a victim of a hate crime or hate incident – as we have built up a good relationship with local residents and groups.  There are facilities at the centre to support victims to report incidents on the dedicated website  which gives information and an online reporting facility. (Reporting incidents anonymously is an option.)

The different levels of a reporting centre can vary depending on resources available – from displaying literature, promoting hate crime reporting or providing recording, reporting and signposting to support services. We aim to display information and support residents if they wish to report incidents online.

To launch the JNR8 Third Party status we applied for a small grant to hold a launch event at JNR8/MPMC on January 25th from 2:30-4:00pm.

The event is JNR8 hate-free zone: Diversity & Culture fair

We will invite local groups to host stalls, demonstrating the diversity of Whalley Range and our partners.

We will invite Victim Support and have invited the GM Police and Crime Commissioner – Tony Lloyd – has been invited to speak along with our Police Inspector Paul Kinrade. We are awaiting confirmation of attendance. We have invited a local group: Reclaim – to work with people to produce a Whalley Range Manifesto:

  • saying no to hate crimes and discrimination
  • promoting a commitment to an age friendly community,
  • promoting and celebrating our richly diverse community
  • respecting our diversity of faiths/cultures/lifestyles,
  • living/working together peacefully
  • striving to respect and look after our environment responsibly
